Series 2: Imitation of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."
 - Ephesians 6:1-4

In this second series in the Holy Scripture, Ephesians 6:1-4 highlights the importance of family relationships within the Christian faith, emphasizing mutual respect, responsibility, and alignment with God's will.

1. Instructions to Children

"Obey your parents in the Lord":

Children are called to obedience, aligning their behaviour in line with God's plan for the family. The expression "in the Lord" suggests that this obedience is a component of their devotion to God and that parents' guidance ought to be in accordance with God's will.

        "Honor your father and mother."

Paul emphasizes the ageless nature of this idea by using the Fifth Commandment in Exodus 20:12;

“Honor your father and your mother,

that your days may be long in the land

which the Lord your God gives you."

Respect, care, and appreciation for their job are all part of honouring parents, which goes beyond mere obedience.

  • Promise attached to obedience:

Paul demonstrates God's favour on a family structure based on love and respect by reminding readers that honouring parents carries a promise of longevity and well-being.

2. Instructions to Parents

"Do not provoke your children to anger."

As the cultural heads of families, fathers, in particular, are advised against being harsh, unjust, or taking any other behaviours that could lead to frustration or resentment in their children. This illustrates the importance of kindness, tolerance, and understanding in parenting.

"Bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord":

Parents are called to nurture their children’s spiritual growth, teaching them God’s ways through example, guidance, and instruction. Discipline and instruction should be rooted in love and directed toward helping children grow in their relationship with God.

Deep Inspiration and Theme

  • Family as a Reflection of God's Order:

The family is viewed as a miniature representation of God's kingdom, where relationships reflect the values of respect, love, and caring for one another.

  • Balance of Authority and Nurture:

While children are called to obedience, parents are reminded to exercise their authority with grace and to prioritize their children’s spiritual and emotional well-being.

Practical Reference

Therefore, dear children, practice obedience and respect toward parents as an expression of love for God. Honour your parents even into adulthood through care, respect, and gratitude.

Dear Parents, lead with love, fairness, and Godly discipline, creating an environment where children can thrive spiritually and emotionally. Teach children about God’s ways, fostering a lifelong relationship with Him.

A Christ-centered family life is envisioned in Ephesians 6:1–4, where love, respect, and shared duty foster harmony and spiritual development.

Gratitude Prayer for the Gift of Family

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family and for the wisdom You provide in Your Word to guide our relationships. I am grateful for the reminder to honour and obey our parents, recognizing their role in nurturing and guiding us. Thank You for the promise of blessings that come from living in obedience to Your will.

Lord, I also thank You for parents and caregivers who lovingly teach, discipline and instruct us in Your ways. For their patience, sacrifices, and devotion, I am deeply grateful. Help them to lead with kindness and wisdom, reflecting Your love in their actions.

I am especially thankful for the balance of love and discipline You encourage within families. May parents not provoke their children but instead nurture them with grace, and may children grow in respect and gratitude toward their parents.

Bless all families, Lord, that they may grow in harmony, love, and faith, living as reflections of Your kingdom. Strengthen our bonds and help us to live according to Your perfect design for family life.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
