Rediscovering True Wealth
“...that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” - Ephesians 1:18
What if you were richer than you think — not in money, but in meaning?
In our world today, wealth is often measured by what we can touch or display — full bank accounts, beautiful homes, prestigious jobs, and luxury possessions. Yet, as many have discovered, material wealth can disappear overnight or fail to fill the deepest emptiness of the heart.
The Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 1:18, redirects our attention from the temporary to the eternal. He prays that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened” — that we would gain spiritual vision to truly understand the riches of our inheritance in Christ.
This inheritance is not about possessions, but about position — being children of God. It’s the kind of wealth that can’t depreciate, can’t be stolen, and doesn’t depend on economic conditions. It is made up of peace that anchors us, joy that sustains us, salvation that secures us, and purpose that gives meaning to every day.
True wealth, then, isn’t found in what we own, but in who owns us. When we understand that our inheritance comes from being God’s beloved, we begin to live differently — with gratitude, confidence, and contentment that no circumstance can shake.

A Story to Reflect On: David’s Awakening
David had everything most people dream about — a thriving business, luxury cars, and a lifestyle of success. But despite all his achievements, a quiet restlessness followed him everywhere. His days were busy, yet his heart felt empty. He laughed often but found no lasting peace.
One weekend, a friend invited him to a simple church retreat. During a moment of reflection, the speaker read Ephesians 1:18 aloud:
“That you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people.”
Those words pierced David’s heart. For the first time, he realized he had been chasing wealth that could never satisfy the soul. That night, he whispered a short but powerful prayer:
“Lord, open the eyes of my heart.”
In that moment of surrender, something shifted. David felt peace for the first time — a peace not tied to his possessions, but to the presence of God. From then on, his pursuit of wealth didn’t stop, but his definition of wealth changed. He discovered joy that money couldn’t buy, purpose that success couldn’t provide, and love that didn’t depend on performance.
Transition
Like David, many of us need our spiritual eyes opened to recognize what we already have in Christ. The riches of our inheritance are not distant promises reserved for heaven — they are living realities for today.
Let’s take a closer look at what these riches are and how they can transform the way we live right now.
What Does “Inheritance in Christ” Really Mean?
In Scripture, an inheritance represents what a parent passes down to a child.
Through Jesus, we’ve been adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:15–17). That means we are heirs of God — recipients of everything He has promised His children.
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…” — Romans 8:17
This inheritance isn’t something we wait for until heaven; it begins now. Every spiritual blessing, every bit of grace, every piece of divine peace and purpose is already available to us in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).
You are not working for an inheritance — you are living from it.
The Fourfold Riches of Our Spiritual Inheritance
Paul’s prayer is that our eyes be enlightened to recognize these riches. Let’s break them down:
A. PEACE — The Calm That Comes from Christ
Before knowing Christ, life often feels like chaos — full of striving and uncertainty. But Jesus gives us peace that transcends understanding (Philippians 4:7).
This peace isn’t the absence of trouble; it’s the presence of God in the middle of it. When we recognize peace as part of our inheritance, anxiety loses its grip, and rest becomes our rhythm.
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.” — John 14:27
B. JOY — The Deep Delight in His Presence
True joy isn’t about circumstances — it’s about relationships. Jesus said, “I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)
Joy is the quiet assurance that God is with us and working all things for our good. It’s part of the inheritance that makes the believer radiant even in trials.
C. SALVATION — The Security of God’s Promise
Salvation is the foundation of all spiritual wealth. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have been forgiven, redeemed, and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14).
That seal is heaven’s guarantee — a divine “proof of ownership.” No sin, failure, or circumstance can undo what God has secured.
Understanding this truth gives us unshakeable confidence in who we are and whose we are.
D. PURPOSE — Living as God’s Treasure
Part of our inheritance is the purpose to live as reflections of God’s glory. We were not saved to merely survive — we were called to shine.
God’s inheritance is found in His holy people (Ephesians 1:18), meaning He sees us as His treasure.
When we realize that, we stop chasing validation and start living out our divine design — to love, serve, and reveal His character in every sphere of life.

How Understanding This Changes How We Live
When you know you are an heir of God:
- You stop competing and start contenting — because you already have everything that matters.
- You stop living in fear — because your future is secured in Christ.
- You stop defining yourself by achievements — because your value is rooted in divine love.
- You give more freely, forgive more easily, and live more boldly — because you know what you carry inside.
In short, understanding your inheritance transforms your mindset. You move from striving for approval to living from identity.
Living as Heirs, Not Beggars
Many Christians live spiritually poor simply because they don’t know what belongs to them.
It’s like inheriting a mansion but choosing to sleep outside.
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:18 is not for us to receive something new, but to realize what we already have.
When your spiritual eyes are opened, your life perspective shifts — problems shrink, gratitude grows, and peace reigns.
“You don’t need more from God; you need more understanding of what you already have in Him.”
Final Reflection:
Your inheritance in Christ is not a future promise — it’s a present possession.
Peace, joy, salvation, and purpose are already yours.
Live like an heir. Think like one. Pray like one.
